Getting decent sleep on an airplane is tough. There’s nothing worse than being cramped and uncomfortable on a long flight. But there are a few things you can do to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible and get a good sleep.


Invest in a travel pillow and blanket. A neck pillow will help support your head and neck, and a blanket will keep you warm if the plane’s temperature is chilly.


There are a few things to look for in a good travel pillow:

  • One that is soft and fluffy, yet firm enough to support your head.
  • A pillow that is adjustable so you can find the perfect fit.
  • An inflatable pillow so you can control the level of firmness.

Dress in comfortable clothing. Loose fitting clothes made from natural fibers are best. Avoid anything tight or constricting that will make you feel uncomfortable.


Drink plenty of water throughout the flight to stay hydrated, but avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate you and make it harder to sleep. Avoid spicy foods that can upset your stomach, and try to eat lightly so you don’t feel sluggish.


If possible, choose an aisle seat so you can stretch your legs easily or get up to walk around when necessary. And if you tend to get motion sickness, pick a seat over the wing where the movement is less noticeable. An inside seat can allow you to lean your head against the airplane fuselage which can be restful If you are larger, you may find it more comfortable to book two seats so you have extra room to move around.
