During the last open studio night, a few of us started kicking around a project idea that immediately clicked for me. What made it even more interesting was how closely it lined up with several of the photography goals I set for 2026. That got me thinking: instead of letting the idea stay abstract, why not map out what it actually takes to build a brand from scratch?
A lot of these steps are things I worked through when I originally built this site. Others are things I’m actively working on right now as part of my longer-term goals.
Here’s the framework I ended up with:
1. Define the brand foundation
What are you trying to say visually?
Who is the work for?
What mood, subjects, lighting style, and influences keep showing up?
2. Build a website and online presence
Create a home base for the work. Portfolio structure, written descriptions, and consistency across platforms all reinforce the same message.
3. Shoot planning and concepts
Instead of shooting randomly, start building ideas intentionally. Mood boards, lighting references, location ideas, and recurring visual motifs all live here.
4. Content production and editing
This is the fun part. Actually making the work – testing lighting setups, refining techniques, and developing a consistent editing approach that supports the look you’re building.
5. Marketing and promotion
Sharing the process as well as the results. Posts, behind-the-scenes material, and progress updates help people understand the direction, not just the finished images. A very challenging part (at least for me).
6. Growth and refinement
Review what’s working, get feedback, adjust the plan, and keep tightening the visual identity over time.

Putting this together helped me realize I’m further along than I thought on some of these steps, and just getting started on others. Either way, mapping the process out makes the path forward feel a lot clearer.
