The Business of Photography – Part 2: Identifying My Key Principles

So part two of the business of photography challenge one is to identify my key principles. What values guide my decisions and behavior? What qualifies are most important in running my business?

This is much simpler then part one of this challenge.

Honesty, Transparency, and Integrity.

Honesty in photography to me means capturing the scene as it is. An unaltered representation of reality. Now this begs the question of cropping, editing, and photoshopping. Are those acceptable? I think it comes down to intent. If you are shooting a portrait or a cosplay then some retouching is acceptable, if you are shooting a story for a newspaper then it’s not.

Transparency – Being open and honest in the photographic (and blogging) process. Describing how an image was manipulated (if it was). Make sure that images accurately represent reality, and any alterations (like cropping or photoshopping) are disclosed if they could influence interpretation.

Integrity – Adhering to ethical principles, being truthful in representing subjects, and respecting the dignity of those photographed.
